About

Artist statement

Throughout my artistic career I have been interested in ornamentation. In 1989 I began making jewellery from found objects. To further my skills I undertook an apprenticeship and qualified as a jeweller in 1998.

My jewellery combines disparate pieces in an attempt to create an aesthetic whole. Semi-precious and precious metals and gemstones mix with beads, enamel, eggshell and existing jewellery. Colour is an important element, as is recycling.

I see jewellery as wearable art – sculpture on a small scale. I expand on this idea of form and function and some of my pieces can be displayed as sculpture when not being worn.

In 2002 I started to experiment with collage. These pieces feature layers of embellishment using paint, glitter, beads, sequins, metals, eggshell and found objects.

When the minutia of my art is magnified it is transformed into a new entity. The overall effect is one of detail and decoration.
